This string of silver beads is of a type called ‘nau gedi’ by the Newari in the Kathmandu Valley. Such beads were formerly worn by the western Tamang women of the Middle Hills region in Nepal. In this example, each bead is filled with mastic to give it weight and make the thin silver go further, a technique typical of Nepalese jewellery.
