A exceptionally well executed polychrome Deruta Italian Majolica Salt Cellar, 16th Century. The exterior displays four female sphinx on the corners with fanciful chimera between them, the center holds a cherubic child or Cupid. This amazing piece is typical of the Patanazzi workshop in Urbino in the 16th century. Urbino was the most important of the Renaissance pottery areas. Please look carefully at my images as the quality and intricate detail is quite wonderful. This corresponds well will other very high quality ceramics made for the Renaissance period European Markets.
The condition is excellent with some small losses on the sphinxes wings as visible in the photos.
