Kunisada Utagawa was revered as the foremost print designer by his contemporaries during his lifetime. He surpassed the popularity of acclaimed artists such as Hiroshige, Hokusai, or Kuniyoshi. Kunisada exhibited exceptional productivity, with an estimated total output exceeding 20,000 designs

Kunisada emerged as a remarkably prolific, successful, and highly esteemed leading designer within the realm of ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock prints) during his time. He was born near Edo as the son of an affluent merchant holding a ferry boat license. At the age of 15, Kunisada joined the prestigious art school of Utagawa Toyokuni and adopted the artist name Kunisada.
